This year HAC was really lucky to be able to take part in a special project with the Prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts, called PoetryQuest.
It was a privilege to be part of the project and to see some wonderful poetry performed at the end of the project.
The project started in November, with an INSET day for the participating teachers and HAC staff. Four primary schools took part, including Grimsdyke, Heathland and Whitefriars primary schools from Harrow. We met the two professional poets leading the project, Francesca Beard and BREIS, and were given a taste of their very different styles as poets. They also helped us to write our own poetry and demonstrated the process the children would go through to create their own work.
In January, 60 children from each of the four schools visited HAC for an exclusive performance by Francesca and BREIS, aiming to inspire them to create their own work. The children also took part in workshops that introduced them to the process of creating their own poetry.
During February, Francesca and BREIS visited the schools and helped them develop their own poetry further. A lot of work went into created the poetry from both the children and the teachers! The schools returned to HAC on the 12th February 2014 for a wonderful performance, and the work that had gone in to writing and to practising for the performance was clear to see!
It was inspiring to watch so many children perform their work so confidently and to articulate their thoughts and feelings so beautifully. We'd like to thank everyone from the four schools that took part, Francesca and BREIS and Ruth from Children and the Arts for all the work that went in to the project. We hope to see the children back here soon performing their work again!
