Headstone Manor & Museum collaborating with Mental Wealth and Re-Route present this online workshop that is aimed at exploring immigration in South Asian communities in Harrow through creative writing. Open to anyone with an interest in creative writing, this workshop is facilitated by South Asian Poet, Katherine Saminaden.
About the workshop
Harrow has a rich and diverse South Asian community, with many untold stories within each family. Through this workshop we are keen to explore stories of immigration; the resilience, braveness and strength shown by the generations before us in creating a home away from home. The impact the immigration journey has on multiple generations, will be one of the many themes touched on during the workshop.
In this workshop, we ask you to choose at least two objects, either your own or passed through your family, which relate to immigration, such as; a photograph, item of clothing, utensils etc.
Using these two treasured objects, Katherine will lead on two creative writing exercises to help you build a short written piece about yourself using these objects as the focal point. Inspired by South Asian Heritage Month, this workshop is about expressing yourself authentically. It should be fun and is for everyone over the age of 16+! We all have a creative writer within us, because we all have our own rich, individual story that only we can express in our very own way.
For this workshop we ask that you prepare the following materials:
- Plenty of Paper
- Highlighters/Coloured Pens
- 2 Treasured objects
- an open mind.
- A story shared…
- Introduction from Katherine + Icebreaker writing exercise
- 20-minute poetry writing exercise
- Sharing space (for those who feel comfortable)
- Wrap up"
