This exhibition of Roy Rodgers’ paintings, mainly oil on canvas, represents the last three years of his output including lockdown. His inspiration and drive has constantly been inspired by landscape, in particular East Anglia, which he discovered later in his life. From living in Suffolk for 38 years, he became entranced by the magic of the atmospheric light, history and deceptive simplicity of the landscape. His aim is to encapsulate these feelings through painting.
His creativity is dependant on use of sketchbooks, drawings and watercolours. He says: “For me, painting is drawn from one’s own imagination and a mixture of memory, plus the reality of what is there, and the love of doing it.”
Quote by the late Ken Howard OBE RA: “To live with a painting by Roy Rodgers is a life enhancing experience, as he always shows us his way of seeing the world. He reveals the world to us, he celebrates the world and he communicates that celebration to us.”
