In the artists own words:
Initially the Foundation Course was about tearing up the rule book with very little formal structure.
I was able to apply myself better when I embarked on the Illustration Diploma (Harrow School of Art). An initial foundation in drawing followed by an understanding of professional briefs with the third year concentrating on building up a portfolio.
There are more examples in the exhibition of the latter architectural drawings and album record covers than my earlier experience. The preceding years were relatively fallow. Life and necessity intervened! I kept my hand in with evening classes and group drawing sessions with my art school friends.
My personal Renaissance came in in 2007 when I met a former Harrow School of Art tutor Roy Rodgers and his partner Cheryl Gould. The latter persuaded me to join her life drawing classes. Although a weakness originally it was the challenge I required.
I really engaged in my vocation from this point as I joined several art societies and have been part of the Harrow Open Studios from their inception. The controlled pencil studies have given away to a gestural and colourful mark making.
As well as the life studies there are imaginative portraits sometimes with very personal subjects usually in oils but now mixed media. Finally, I readily embrace the challenge and it is borne of by my final (but first) sculpted piece entitled "Life in the round".
I'm ready for my Foundation course now!
